The brief
AusForms came out of a personal gripe — I kept watching mates and family copy the same details into government PDF after government PDF, fingers cramping, eyes glazing. Medicare, Centrelink, NDIS, school enrolment, the lot. Every form asks for the same name, address, DOB, but somehow you're typing it fresh every single time. I wanted a tool that read the form, knew what it was asking for, and filled it in like a sensible human would.
The challenge
Australian government PDFs are a mixed bag — some have proper interactive fields, plenty are flattened scans, and the field names are wildly inconsistent. 'family_name', 'surname', 'Last Name', 'lname_2'. No two forms agree. I needed something that could look at a form it had never seen before, work out what each box wanted, and let the user fill it in once and reuse the answers everywhere — without storing sensitive personal data on a server somewhere it shouldn't be.
What I built
I built AusForms as a Next.js progressive web app so it runs offline and keeps the user's data on their device. PDF.js handles the rendering and field detection client-side, and an AI extraction layer maps quirky field names to a normalised profile schema — once I've taught it that 'family_name' and 'surname' and 'Last Name' all mean the same thing, the next form fills itself. I added a multi-stage workflow so half-finished forms can be saved and picked up later, plus a clean review step before anything gets stamped into the PDF. Built it solo, end to end, deliberately keeping the stack lean.
The outcome
AusForms now supports 50+ Australian government and medical forms and routinely cuts completion time by around 90%. The PWA install means people use it from their phone at the kitchen table, offline, without ever handing their data to a third party. It's the closest thing I've built to a tool I personally couldn't live without.
